Young Filipina Designer Joanna Rechelle Fungo Makes Stunning Debut at Paris Fashion Week

In a remarkable and heartfelt introduction to the global fashion stage, young Filipina designer Joanna Rechelle Fungo, founder and creative director of Anna Cheung Couture, made waves at Paris Fashion Week Spring 2025. Held at The Westin Vendôme, the runway show showcased her collection, Pilipinas Kong Mahal (An Ode to My Beloved Philippines), paying tribute to her roots, cultural identity, and the artistry of Philippine craftsmanship.

Celebrating Filipino Heritage Through Fashion

Joanna’s debut collection drew inspiration from the Philippines' rich cultural heritage, showcasing modern silhouettes with historical and indigenous elements.

"Since this is my first international show, I wanted to represent our country through my creations and advocate for the protection of our cultural identity," Joanna shared.

One of the standout pieces was inspired by the T’boli Dream Weavers and ancient Babaylans. With designs reminiscent of t’nalak patterns—an iconic woven fabric crafted through dreams by the T’boli tribe—Joanna brought tradition to the runway.

“Whenever I see t’nalak patterns, I feel connected. It gives me hope and fierce energy,” she added. Instead of conventional fabrics like satin or tulle, Joanna used t’nalak to create a tapis-like illusion, merging heritage and innovation.

Fashion Editorial: Traje De Mestiza and Agila Couture

Adding to her ode to Filipino history, Joanna showcased a Traje De Mestiza, inspired by the elegance of Maria Clara, a timeless symbol of Filipino femininity. The design featured a rattan-inspired skirt and a coconut tree color palette, symbolizing the buko as the “Tree of Life” and reflecting Filipino hospitality.

“Without the fight of our ancestors, we wouldn’t have the freedom we enjoy today. It’s a reminder of our ‘Tree of Life,’ our history,” Joanna explained.

The show-stopping finale featured the Agila Couture, inspired by the majestic Philippine Eagle. The voluminous gown was meticulously crafted using layers of black and brown tulle to mimic the eagle’s feathers, with the silhouette resembling a panuelo for a touch of traditional grace.

A Journey of Resilience and New Beginnings

Joanna’s Paris debut was not just a milestone but a testament to resilience. After surviving a near-fatal accident and taking a year-long medical hiatus, she returned to the fashion scene in May 2024.

“I lost my footing during the hiatus, but with my family’s encouragement and faith, I regained my confidence. I believe this opportunity was God’s way of giving me something bigger.”

The Road Ahead

For Joanna Rechelle Fungo, this Paris Fashion Week debut marks a significant leap toward her dreams. As Anna Cheung Couture continues to blend modern designs with Filipino artistry, Joanna aims to build her momentum in the fashion industry, reach a wider audience, and inspire aspiring artists.

“This is just the beginning, and I hope to inspire more people through my story, my designs, and my love for the Philippines.”
